GOG surprises fans with restored classics and new projects at its first Showcase

Julia ·

To celebrate its 18th anniversary, the platform unveiled new re-releases, game preservation projects, and changes that could shape the future of PC gaming.

Nostalgia took center stage in the gaming world! This Thursday, November 5, GOG held its first official showcase, using its 18th anniversary celebration to reveal announcements that go far beyond new games. Highlights included the return of '90s classics, platform improvements, and even a new social network designed for gamers.

One of the most exciting announcements was the return of Wing Commander: Prophecy, which received a special 30th Anniversary Edition featuring improved compatibility with modern computers, native controller support, and restored original cinematic cutscenes. The release is part of a collection of seven anniversary editions, which also includes other titles from the franchise and the classic Road Rash, returning to PC with its own 30th Anniversary Edition.

And there's more for those who care about preserving video game history: GOG also announced that Nox is joining its preservation program, following requests from the community. The initiative aims to restore classic games and ensure they continue to run on modern computers.

But the announcements weren't all about nostalgia. The company also revealed a publishing partnership with Retrovibe, which will support independent developers in creating games inspired by classic titles, starting with Project Warlock: Lost Chapters.

Another new addition is GOG Social, a social network for gamers that has opened sign-ups for its closed beta. The idea is to bring together gaming discussions, videos, screenshots, and polls without relying on an algorithm-driven feed.

Finally, GOG GALAXY, the platform's game management client, is also coming to Linux. The application will receive improvements on Windows and Mac, but it will remain optional: players will still be able to download and keep their games using offline installers without needing the client.

What classic game would you love to see get a new version? With so many games becoming locked to outdated systems, preservation initiatives like this one could make a real difference to the future of the gaming industry.
